Middlemarch

Middlemarch is a hideaway in the Strath Taieri plains, an hour's scenic drive from Dunedin.

The Otago Central Railway line runs from Wingatui near Dunedin to Middlemarch. Most of the Line has now been lifted but the line from Dunedin still operates with the Taieri Gorge Railway Train.

Walking or Biking the Otago Central Rail Trail

The Otago Central Rail Trail stretches 150km from Clyde to Middlemarch on the Strath Taieri.

The Rail Trail takes around 3-5 days to bike and 5-7 days to walk. There are plenty of places to stay along the way and there are also guided trips.

Middlemarch has a Secret

When you drive through the Strath Taieri plains and into Middlemarch you will find a special little place called the Kissing Gate Cafe.

Here I feasted on a gourmet Chicken pie like no other with a plate overflowing with freshly cooked vegetables. Only an hour trip from Dunedin, the cafe's friendly small town feel complimented a meal of international quality.
